THURSDAY 6TH JUNE, 18:00 – 20:00

In this edition of our critical discussion forum we will be looking at different theories of the role of the artist both in relation to our Spring exhibitions and in terms of how these ideas have changed throughout history. We will be considering the idea of the artist as craftsperson or artisan, then thinking about conceptual practices and de-skilling.

We will think about art for art’s sake, and romantic ideas of the artist as visionary and art as linked to suffering. We will talk about our own experiences of doing and experiencing art, and of being or knowing artists, and think critically of how the roles of artists are defined in our society now.

We will be providing prompts in the form of short texts which can be read in advance, but we will also be reading through them together on the day.
